Below are just a few general points about the breed.

The Dogue de Bordeaux is an ancient french breed whose uses ranged from guarding to hunting, fighting & draught dog just to name a few.

They are a short coated dog, Golden fawn or reddish in color with a black or red mask. They are a large, heavy well muscled and powerfully built dog with a large head.

Height is from 23 to 26 inches for bitches and 24 to 27 for males with weight ranging from 45 and 50kgs - there is no upper limit on weight.

They are a dog that does not require loads of exercise - the best exercise for these dogs is where the dog decides when it has had enough.

The Dogue De Bordeaux lives an average of eight to ten years

They are a breed that are relatively low maintenance (assuming the dog purchased is in good health of course) generally only requiring a regular brush and occasional wash. They also require regular ear cleaning to avoid infections.

They are a very even tempered dog, hence making them ideal family pets. They are a dog that is safe around adults and when raised with children, are known to be completely trustworthy around them.

Like any dog its personality is affected by owners and we recommend Dogue de Bordeaux should be taken out and allowed frequent contact with other animals & people from an early age.

Health issues..

Like many large breeds Hip Dysplasia is a health issue that affects the Dogue de Bordeaux. It is an inherited condition affecting the hip joint, most commonly asserting itself during times of rapid growth. Many Dogue de Bordeaux breeders will supply hip scoring certificates for parents of puppies, thus new buyers can reduce the risk of a puppy having hip dysplasia, by ensuring that the parents have a reasonable hip score. As a general rule the lower the hip score the better.

Other health issues include demodectic mange, bloat (accute gastric dilation),problems with the heart & eyes.

Note: many of these problems are common with many breeds and can be reduced by breeders testing all breeding stock before breeding occurs. Like any breed the chances of many health problems increasing can be dependant on breeders doing the right thing for the breed so our only advice is…

BUYER BEWARE - SOMETIMES THE CHEAPEST PUPPY FOR SALE BECOMES A VERY COSTLY PROBLEM LATER IN LIFE !!!!
